Weekend Update

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

1-19-08 & 1-20-08

Apparently I missed the memo that this weekend was “Technological Failure Weekend ‘08.” My camera’s batteries died soon after taking the photo of the day on Saturday, and me, being the tard that I am, left my battery charger in Greenwood. So there is only one picture for this weekend, and it’s not exciting in the least.

Also, I’ve been fighting with my new computer since Friday night. I’m still trying to get everything I need installed on it, but with my internet dropping on me all the time it makes it slightly more difficult. So now that I’ve finally got things working properly on it (we’ll see how long that lasts), I can start to do some of the ridiculous amounts of homework I have to do before Tuesday.

Work, 1:02pm

If you ever wanted to know what goes on behind the counter at a Starbucks, the answer is: a whole lot of nothing, that is, until 15 minutes before closing when suddenly everyone needs coffee ASAP and no one seems to know what’s on the menu.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves with customers. PLEASE do not stare blankly at the menu for 5 minutes then ask “what’s good?” What’s good?! Our tap water is fabulous. Thank you for wasting everyone’s time. The people behind you really appreciate waiting on you to make your order, no please take 5 more minutes to decide that you want a strawberries and creme frappuccino. Oh yeah, by the way we are technically closed right now, but I’m willing to wait. You’re THAT important to me.

Just for clarification: I am perfectly fine with the phrase “what do you recommend?” or “hows the such and such,” but when people that look like they just walked in off the set of COPS ask “what’s good” it makes me want to die a little. Take your 8 kids that are running around the store back to the trailer and stop asking me to make you “one of ‘em cappercinners like they gots at the gas station in ‘em lil machines.” Also, none of the cappuccinos come with “coo’ whip” and the word is grande not “grand.”

We cringe when we see you coming, we know you are going to be a pain. So if you’re wondering why your cup says “GSC” on it, it’s because we just made you a “Gas Station Cappuccino” which has sugar as its main ingredient with a side of coffee and a splash of milk. You just got a white chocolate, vanilla, hazelnut latte with extra whipped cream. Yes, I know you love it. It tastes just like the ones you get at the gas station of your choice for $1.00. You have a good day ma’am.

Anyway, I have work to do. Enough of my procrastination.

Until tomorrow,
Juniper

Southern Snow

01-17-08

Sorry this is a little late…lost track of time.

So it snowed. First snow of the winter here in SC and everyone ran outside to play in it like we were kids again. Megan and I joined…[click photos for bigness]

It was fun while it lasted (about 15-20 minutes). Then the temperature dropped and it started to rain so everyone went back in.

Today was a pretty normal day, slept in late (amazing), then had lunch with Katrina and her kids Breah and Kolby (who are both absolutely precious). I got to 331 early because I, of course, had procrastinated and did not have my homework done yet, so I finished that and sat through another incredibly thrilling class with the lovely Dr. Acorn.

…does anyone else think that she looks like the nerdy chicken on Chicken run? Maybe it’s just me.

Anyway, Jennifer P and I went out after class for our weekly outing. Went shopping and had a ton of Chinese food….seriously debated ice cream for a while, then I came back home.

I wrote out my schedule from now until Feb 16th. I didn’t realize how much stuff I’m doing this semester. 17hrs of school, fieldwork about 7 hours a week, Psi Chi, work (which starting pretty soon I’ll be working on Friday nights again), and everything else. This semester is crazy.

So nothing too interesting to report today. I have to go to the doctor tomorrow and get the final verdict on TB Scare ‘08.

Mycobacterium Tuberculosis

01-16-08

I’m extremely tired so this entry will be short.

Katrina and I went back to the doctor to get our PPD tests read. Mine came back positive, so there’s a chance I have tuberculosis.

We spent the greater part of our afternoon/evening at the doctor’s office, health department, and the hospital.

I got two chest x-rays and I’ll find out on Friday what the doctor has to say about them. At this point 6 months of medication seems to be in my future.

Sequintions

01-15-08

I suppose the saying “you learn something new every day” really is true, even if you learn something you wish you hadn’t.

Here are a few things I learned today [click photos for bigness]:

1) Jeremy is alive and well! Also, he is horrible at fake smiles.

2) Corey is actually a super hero named “Geometry Man” who likes to get “parallel” with the ladies.

3) The word “sequintion.”

Sequintion-[see-kwin-shuh-n] Noun:

a small shining disk or spangle used for ornamentation, as on women’s clothing and accessories or on theatrical costumes.

:

sequintioned, adjective

“giiiiirl I be wearin’ those sequintions on my shoooooes -Lauren Cann

4) Sexual Behavior and Deviance [Psych 363] is boring…

…as well as extremely disturbing. Dr. E revealed he was once in a relationship in which the woman very much enjoyed him rubbing his head against hers.
Heres a photo reference from Lander’s faculty page:

Disturbing.

And lastly…
5) The trees touch the moon

A Girl and Her Lens: Reunited

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Hey, hi, and hello!

My quasi-serious New Year’s resolution was to take more photos. It’s something that I have always enjoyed doing, but with everything that has been going on lately with school and the like I’ve fallen out of the hobby. To remedy this I (with the wonderful assistance of Ben) created this blog. [Hopefully] every day I will post at least one picture I have taken. That seems easy right? Well, theres a catch. I have to take a photo of whatever I’m doing/surroundings/etc between 1:00pm and 2:00pm. There will be no special artistic merit to the picture of the day, simply a random shot taken within the hour. With this I hope to create a sort of journal in pictures.

01-14-08

Today was a hectic day, but I pulled out my camera and took a ton of pictures in between all the errands, my field placement work, and classes. It felt so great to have the camera in my hands again, even if it wasn’t for anything serious.
Taking pictures around Greenwood proved to be rather interesting though. Katrina and I noticed a trend among the business signs around the city. It goes without saying that Greenwood isn’t exactly the brightest crayon in the wonderful box that is South Carolina (or the US for that matter), but our discovery made me lose a bit of faith in the city I call home.

Apparently, Greenwood residents comprehend only short concise statements, that contain no “fancy” words. [click photos for bigness]

Example 1:

Miss Ann’s Fried Chicken

This sign states that yes, they would be happy to accept debit cards from their loyal, chicken-loving patrons, without any of that unnecessary grammatical mumbo-jumbo.

Example 2:
Subway

This sign clearly states a popular menu item among the general population of a college town is served at this location, with expression! It then goes on to confirm that YES! they would be more than happy to make you said menu item. After eating afore mentioned menu item, you will proudly state that it was GREAT.

There are so many of these signs around the city…which is both hilarious and sad. Katrina and I are officially on the hunt to photograph more.

And now for the picture of the day:

See you tomorrow!

P.S. I am officially in love with the show Pushing Daisies. It has a very Tim Burton-esque feel to it, and of course, it doesn’t hurt that Lee Pace as Ned is absolutely adorable.

You should acquire it in whatever way you see fit and enjoy it too.
